USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program (NTDP) has introduced a refreshed version of its iconic shield logo just ahead of the 2026‑27 season. While the emblem retains the familiar shape that has long represented the program, the update brings a subtle shift in its colour palette, giving the design a contemporary edge without abandoning its heritage.
The redesign draws directly from the shield that was originally crafted by the late Jim Johannson, affectionately known as “JJ” among teammates and fans. Johannson’s imprint on the program stretches far beyond the logo; his vision helped shape the USA Hockey Arena and contributed to the United States’ collection of 64 International Ice Hockey Federation medals before his passing in January 2018.
Honoring a Legacy
Jim Johannson’s impact on the NTDP is woven into every facet of its operation. From his early days as a player to his later role as an administrator, Johannson championed talent development and institutional growth, leaving a legacy that continues to guide the program’s future.
Since its inception in 1996, the NTDP has been celebrated as the premier player‑development pipeline in American hockey. Each year the program fields under‑17 and under‑18 squads that compete in a grueling 62‑game schedule split between the United States Hockey League (USHL).
Season Opener and Early Matchups
The upcoming season will kick off on September 11, when the U17 team travels to Alaska to face the Anchorage Wolverines. A day later, the U18 squad will take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a preseason tilt before returning to the renovated main rink at USA Hockey Arena for the ‘Play With Purpose’ game on September 12.
Adding to the excitement, the U18 team’s first home game at the newly upgraded rink is slated for October 3, when they host the Boston College Eagles. The match marks a milestone in the facility’s transformation and underscores the NTDP’s commitment to providing top‑tier environments for its prospects.
