California’s high school athletic landscape reached a historic milestone this year, with a total of 835,088 students competing across the state’s sports programs — a 1.6% increase that marks the highest participation level ever recorded.
Among the most striking gains is the surge in girls’ flag football, which swelled by 25.4% to 24,979 athletes, propelling the sport to sixth place among girls’ competitions and underscoring the rapid expansion of emerging disciplines.
The momentum extends to other female sports, where wrestling and beach volleyball posted double‑digit growth of 15.6% and 11.5% respectively, while traditional powerhouses such as soccer, volleyball and track and field maintained modest upward trends.
On the boys’ side, eleven‑man football continues to dominate with 87,718 participants, though its numbers slipped 4% from the previous year, reflecting a broader shift toward alternative athletic opportunities.
Executive Director’s Perspective
CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti emphasized the significance of these trends, stating that the data reflects a sustained commitment to education‑based athletics and an expanding menu of options that keep students engaged in school activities.
The growth across diverse sports not only highlights the evolving interests of young athletes but also signals a promising future for inclusive, school‑driven competition throughout California.
