Dylan Murphy appointed assistant coach at Michigan
The University of Michigan announced the hiring of Dylan Murphy as an assistant coach for its men’s basketball program, bringing a decade‑long track record of player development within the NBA G League and the Orlando Magic organization.
Murphy spent eight years with the Orlando Magic, rising from a basketball operations analyst to an NBA assistant before taking the helm of the Osceola Magic, the franchise’s G League affiliate. Under his leadership the Magic’s developmental team captured three consecutive Eastern Conference No. 1 seeds from 2023 through 2026 and earned the NBA G League Coach of the Month award in March 2025 after guiding the club to an 11‑3 record.
His success extended to the NBA Summer League, where he coached the Orlando squad in Las Vegas in 2024, and to the cultivation of standout talents such as Mac McClung, who was named G League MVP in 2024 and earned first‑team All‑NBA G League honors in both 2024 and 2025. Murphy also mentored Lester Quinones, Trevelin Queen and Kevon Harris, all of whom received NBA G League Next Up Game selections and helped nine players secure NBA call‑ups during his tenure.
Before joining Michigan, Murphy served as an assistant to Steve Clifford and Jamahl Mosley with the Orlando Magic from 2020 to 2023, and earlier honed his craft as a graduate assistant at Ball State and as a scout for the Atlanta Hawks. He began his professional journey with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, leading the team to the 2014 NBA Development League championship and guiding them to the finals again in 2015.
The hiring underscores Michigan’s commitment to integrating proven developmental expertise into its program, positioning the Wolverines to leverage Murphy’s extensive network and proven ability to nurture talent as they prepare for the upcoming season.
