Tennessee basketball announced the addition of Jalen Washington to its roster for the 2026‑27 campaign, a move that bolsters the Volunteers’ frontcourt ahead of the new season.
Washington, a 6‑foot‑10 center who previously played for Vanderbilt, secured an extra year of eligibility after a Tennessee state court issued a temporary injunction that overturned the NCAA’s ‘5‑in‑5’ rule, allowing him to extend his collegiate career.
During his most recent stint with the Commodores he posted career‑high numbers, averaging 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting a crisp 61.8 % from three‑point range, a skill set that could stretch defenses and open driving lanes for the Volunteers.
Coach Rick Barnes, who has been scouting the transfer market since June, said the program had a scholarship spot available for the right piece and that Washington fits the profile of a versatile interior presence.
His arrival comes as Tennessee prepares to integrate him alongside fellow newcomers Christian Fermin and Myles Rubin, while also retaining a core group of guards and wings that helped the team finish among the nation’s top transfer classes according to 247Sports.
