Grant Paranica announced his resignation as head coach of Grand Forks Central, ending a 13‑year tenure that reshaped the school’s boys hockey program.
During his time at the helm, Paranica guided the Knights to six North Dakota state championships, captured in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2025 and 2026, a streak that placed the program among the state’s most dominant forces.
His achievements earned him four East Region Coach of the Year awards (2014, 2015, 2019, 2025) and five North Dakota High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors (2014, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021), underscoring his peers’ recognition.
Accolades and Recognition
Paranica also reached the national stage, being nominated for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 2022 and 2025, and his former players have repeatedly earned conference accolades, including Judd Caulfield and Brandon Holt, who captured Hockey East Defenseman of the Year at Maine.
A Coach’s Philosophy
Paranica described his approach as demanding, emphasizing rigorous practices that often out‑intensity games, a method he believes cultivates improvement, confidence, and a resilient mindset in his players.
In his resignation statement, he reflected on the camaraderie with staff, the thrill of competition, and the privilege of mentoring young athletes, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lead the program and pride in the culture built over more than a decade.
Central athletic director Tony Bina praised Paranica’s legacy, highlighting his passion for high school hockey and his role in shaping not only skilled players but also character‑driven individuals.
