A New Era for the Big East
Tim Brosnan, the former MLB executive who helped launch the MLB Network and the World Baseball Classic, has been named the new commissioner of the Big East Conference, tasked with turning the league’s basketball pedigree into a commercially viable brand.
Brosnan’s appointment comes as the conference enjoys a resurgence driven by UConn’s recent national championships, but also faces the challenge of a top‑heavy roster of programs that dominate the tournament while others struggle for relevance.
The league’s future will hinge on its ability to balance a basketball‑first identity with the broader expectations of college sports, including scheduling, recruiting and securing a more lucrative media deal that can keep pace with power conferences.
With the current TV contract with Fox Sports running through 2031 and a separate agreement with Madison Square Garden extending to 2032, Brosnan has a five‑year window to prove that the Big East can compete for top prospects and attract sponsors that match its ambition.
Val Ackerman, who previously led the conference as commissioner, will likely serve in an advisory capacity, while coaches such as Dan Hurley of UConn and Mike Anthony of St. John’s will be watched closely as the league’s on‑court performance becomes the ultimate metric of success.
The Big East’s geographic footprint spans New York City, Connecticut and other Northeastern markets, a region that offers both cultural cachet and logistical challenges for travel and broadcasting.
As the NCAA Tournament expands to 76 teams and power conferences prioritize their own members, the Big East must sharpen its scheduling strategy and deepen its recruiting pipelines to stay competitive, especially as UConn’s football ambitions could tempt it toward a power conference with higher TV revenues.
If the league can translate its basketball excellence into a sustainable business model, it may secure a place at the top tier of college sports, but the road ahead will require strategic vision, financial acumen and a relentless focus on the fan experience.
