A milestone commitment
Gavin Stecker, a four-star linebacker from Bettendorf, announced his commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes in December 2023, becoming the first prospect from the 2027 class to secure a scholarship with the program. His decision came after weighing offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Minnesota, and was influenced by Iowa's reputation for developing linebackers who reach the NFL.
During his junior season Stecker led Bettendorf to a 4-5 record, missing the state playoffs, but posted a team-high 77 tackles. The performance earned him a four-star rating and a list of coveted scholarship offers, which he ultimately narrowed down to the Hawkeyes.
Stecker's father once shared the locker room with Pat Angerer, a former Hawkeye star now serving as a color analyst for Iowa football. That family connection, combined with the program's consistent culture under head coach Kirk Ferentz, helped seal the deal for the young linebacker.
Seth Wallace, Iowa's linebackers coach, was Stecker's primary recruiter. Wallace's straightforward approach and the trust he built with Stecker played a decisive role in the recruit's final choice. Wallace has previously mentored several NFL-caliber linebackers, reinforcing the pathway Stecker envisions for himself.
Iowa's linebacker legacy resonated deeply with Stecker. He admires the careers of Brian Urlacher, Roquan Smith, and Patrick Queen, and hopes to emulate their blend of speed, instincts, and leadership. The examples of Jack Campbell, Jay Higgins, Nick Jackson, and Karson Sharar illustrate the program's ability to translate college success into professional impact.
Despite the disappointment of a subpar high school season, Stecker remains focused on leading Bettendorf to a stronger finish in his senior year. He sees the upcoming campaign as an opportunity to showcase his growth and to honor the legacy of the Hawkeye linebackers he hopes to join.
