Garza Commits to Bosnia and Herzegovina
Luka Garza, the 27‑year‑old forward who wrapped up his rookie season with the Boston Celtics, announced that he will wear the colors of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers. The move comes after a season in which he averaged 8.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.0 assist in just 16.2 minutes per game, providing depth off the bench for the Celtics.
Bosnia and Herzegovina sit at 2‑2 in Group C and are scheduled to face Türkiye on July 2 before taking on Serbia on July 6. Garza’s addition is viewed as a boost that could tip the balance in the team’s favor as they look to secure a spot in the final tournament.
Head coach Dario Gjergja welcomed the prospect of pairing Garza with the national squad, stating that the player’s versatility and work ethic align perfectly with the team’s ambitions. ‘I’m thrilled to have Luka join us,’ Gjergja said, emphasizing that the forward’s experience on the court will complement the existing roster.
Garza’s father, Frank Garza, has long championed the idea of his son representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, recalling countless conversations about the honor of playing for the country’s flag. The forward himself described the opportunity as ‘a dream come true’ and expressed excitement about contributing to the team’s campaign this summer.
Looking Ahead to the Qualifiers
The upcoming matches against Türkiye and Serbia will be more than just games; they will be a test of how quickly Garza can integrate into a system that has already shown resilience. If the Bosnian side can harness his skill set, the qualifiers could mark a pivotal moment for basketball in the region.
