The matchup continues a series that dates back decades, with Seton Hall holding a 16‑1 advantage. Their most recent meeting in November 2009 at the same venue resulted in an 87‑72 victory for the Pirates under coach Bobby Gonzalez.
The exhibition marks a reversal of an earlier decision by Shaheen Holloway to avoid an in‑state schedule, a move that had sparked discussion among fans and analysts. Holloway and King Rice, longtime rivals turned friends, have now coordinated the showcase to benefit their respective programs.
Both schools are leveraging the event to address roster needs. With high turnover expected, the fundraiser provides a pragmatic way to supplement scholarships and recruiting resources while maintaining competitive depth.
Seton Hall will next travel to Philadelphia’s historic Palestra on November 9, where it will participate in a doubleheader against an American Athletic Conference opponent. The Palestra, built in 1927 and often called the "Cathedral of College Basketball," previously hosted Seton Hall in November 2007, when they defeated Navy and Virginia under Gonzalez.
