A sport poised for breakthrough
Women’s flag football is inching toward full NCAA championship status, with a potential title game slated for the spring of 2028. The sport, currently classified under the NCAA’s emerging‑sports umbrella, has seen a surge of interest across campuses, prompting institutions to allocate resources for coaching, recruitment and logistics.
The scale of participation is striking. In the 2024 academic year more than 68,800 girls competed in high‑school flag football, and over 120 colleges field teams in the NCAA’s emerging‑sports category. The growth has been especially pronounced in states that have sanctioned the sport as a varsity offering for girls, now exceeding twenty states.
Key figures are shaping the narrative. Cal Poly’s coaching staff, led by head coach Liz Sowers, have secured commitments from standout players such as Maci Joncich and Ashlea Klam, aiming to become the first Division I program to capture a national title. Their presence on the field also extends to the USA Football national team, which will contest the IFAF world championships in Germany later this year.
The sport’s momentum is bolstered by institutional support. The NCAA plans to vote in January 2026 on whether flag football will be elevated to Division I, II and III competition. Meanwhile, the NFL has signaled its endorsement through sponsorship of the NFL Flag Championships, which attracted more than 3,500 participants, and by backing a future professional league.
Beyond college play, the ambition stretches to the Olympic stage. Organizers view flag football as a gateway to broader visibility, hoping the sport will join the roster of NCAA‑champion disciplines such as ice hockey and wrestling through the Emerging Sports for Women program.
