Cal Poly has announced the appointment of Ed Daniels as its new assistant coach for the women’s basketball program, a move that brings a wealth of experience in player development and high‑level recruiting to the team.
A Coach With Proven Track Record
Daniels, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, honed his game as a guard at Bakersfield College before embarking on professional stints in Ireland, Spain and Canada. He transitioned to coaching in Texas, first as an assistant at Dynamic Prep and then as the head coach of the school’s inaugural women’s team.
Under his leadership, the John Paul II squad captured the TAPPS 6A state championship in 2021‑22, and Dynamic Prep went on to win the 2024‑25 MaxPreps National Championship and the 2025‑26 Overtime Elite title, adding back‑to‑back TCAL 6A state crowns in 2022‑23 and 2023‑24.
Shanele Stires, Cal Poly’s head coach, praised Daniels for his dedication to developing young talent, noting that his roster has produced All‑Americans and national champions.
His expertise will be leveraged in skill development, opponent scouting and recruiting, particularly within the Texas pipeline that has proven fertile for the program.
Daniels expressed enthusiasm about joining Cal Poly, saying the university’s commitment to excellence and athlete development mirrors his own professional philosophy.
