Three former Wake Forest field hockey players have returned to the international stage, bringing the Demon Deacons’ championship pedigree to the 2024 World Masters Hockey World Cup. Their participation underscores how college success can translate into lifelong athletic achievement on a global platform.
Kim Romansky of the class of 2009 and Michelle Kasold of the class of 2008 were key contributors to the U.S. O35 team, which competed in six matches in Schiedam, Netherlands. The squad posted a flawless 3‑0 record in pool play, highlighted by a decisive goal against Ireland that helped secure a narrow victory.
A Reunion on the International Stage
The tournament provided a rare opportunity for Romansky and Kasold to reconnect after a 15‑year gap, sharing a locker room once more in the Netherlands. Their reunion evoked memories of college days and reinforced the lasting bonds forged at Wake Forest.
Amanda Misselhorn, the sole Wake Forest representative on the O45 team in Rotterdam, captained her side through a demanding schedule that included matches against Belgium, Chile, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and Spain. Her leadership mirrored the competitive spirit that defined her collegiate career.
Beyond the scores, the experience reflected the university’s emphasis on teamwork and lifelong camaraderie. Coach Jen’s recruiting philosophy had always focused on assembling players who could thrive together, a principle that now resonates on the world stage as alumni continue to represent their alma mater with pride.
The tournament was made possible by the support of USA Field Hockey and World Masters Hockey, organizations that provide former collegiate athletes with a pathway to continue competing after retirement. Their involvement ensures that the legacy of Wake Forest hockey extends far beyond campus.
