The University of Iowa announced that senior defender Zach Lutmer has been placed on the 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, the annual honor that spotlights the nation’s most dominant defensive player.
Lutmer’s 2025 campaign was nothing short of spectacular; he started all 13 games, amassing 71 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions and a touchdown while also breaking up seven passes. His performance earned second‑team All‑Big Ten honors from coaches and third‑team recognition from the media, and he was crowned Iowa’s Roy Carver Most Valuable Player on defense.
Lutmer’s Defensive Impact
Athlon and other publications have already labeled Lutmer a preseason first‑team All‑American, and he remains a candidate for the 2026 Lott IMPACT Trophy. Iowa’s defense, which ranked eighth in scoring defense at 15.6 points per game and ninth in total defense at 280.4 yards per game last season, will lean heavily on his playmaking ability as the team looks to build on that success.
Pieper and Lauck: Anchoring the Offensive Line
Alongside Lutmer, teammates Kade Pieper and Trevor Lauck earned spots on the 2026 Outland Trophy watch list, an award that celebrates the country’s top interior lineman. Both players were recognized as first‑team All‑Americans by Athlon and Pro Football Focus, with Pieper also landing on the Walter Camp first‑team and Lauck receiving preseason second‑team All‑American nods from Athlon.
A Legacy of Line Excellence
The Outland Trophy has a storied history at Iowa, with former Hawkeyes such as Brandon Scherff (2014), Robert Gallery (2003), Alex Karras (1957) and Calvin Jones (1955) all claiming the honor. This tradition underscores the program’s long‑standing reputation for producing elite interior linemen.
In 2025 the Iowa offensive line captured the Joe Moore Award, recognizing the nation’s most outstanding line unit. The group posted a top‑five national average time‑to‑pressure of 2.8 seconds, a testament to the cohesion and technique that Pieper and Lauck helped instill.
