A New Era for Great Park Baseball
The Irvine City Council has given the green light to a five-year partnership that will see a new professional baseball franchise call Great Park home beginning next summer. The arrangement, brokered with Innovation Baseball Partners, is framed as a fiscal lifeline for a municipality confronting a projected $47 million structural deficit.
Under the terms, the team will remit $4,000 each month in rent and could be required to pay up to $1,000 per game once the stadium’s seating capacity surpasses 3,000 or after the lease reaches its fourth year. In addition, the city will retain 15 percent of advertising revenue and half of any net naming-rights proceeds, subject to council approval.
The franchise is slated to host 48 home games annually from May 1 through September 30 at the newly expanded Great Park Baseball Stadium. Ticket pricing has yet to be finalized, though comparable markets have listed premium seats between $30 and $35 and bleacher tickets from $10 to $15.
Community Investment and Operational Details
Innovation Baseball Partners, which also operates teams in Long Beach, Oakland and Yuba-Sutter, has pledged at least $25,000 each year toward community programming that includes clinics, camps, coaching and donated tickets. The team must also meet a set of operational milestones, including the provision of blackout dates for historic local events that the city may designate.
The agreement places the new club within the independent Pioneer Baseball League, an unaffiliated circuit that collaborates with Major League Baseball but operates outside the traditional Minor League structure. Financial benefits to the city will be reviewed periodically to ensure the partnership continues to alleviate the budgetary pressures outlined in recent fiscal forecasts.
