A recent analysis of two decades of emergency‑room data reveals that more than 6,400 people in the United States have sought treatment for hockey‑related eye injuries, yet fewer than two percent of those patients wore protective eyewear at the time of impact.
The Human Cost of a Missed Helmet
The injuries span a spectrum from minor irritations to sight‑threatening emergencies such as retinal detachment and globe rupture, with nearly one in eight cases deemed acute enough to jeopardize vision.
According to the study, the majority of incidents stem from a stray hockey stick, and the sport’s three main variants — ice, field and street — show similar injury rates, underscoring that the risk is not confined to a single discipline.
Age plays a clear role: children are far more likely to sustain minor anterior‑segment injuries, while adults disproportionately experience posterior‑segment damage that can affect deeper ocular structures.
Gender disparities also emerge, with males more frequently presenting major anterior injuries, and the data show a dip in reported cases from 2004 to 2018 followed by a modest resurgence up to 2023.
The researchers, led by Leo L.T. Meller, MD of the University of California San Diego Shiley Eye Institute, conclude that consistent use of protective eyewear and targeted education are essential to curb preventable ocular trauma in hockey.
