Booker High School in Sarasota, Florida, found itself at the center of a storm when head coach and athletic director Carlos Woods was removed from his post on July 16 amid a district‑wide and police investigation.
The fallout rippled through the roster, with at least 21 players electing to transfer out of the program, including standout defenders Jordan Booker, Maleek Lee and Ky'Mani Sellers.
New Coaching Direction
Angie Byrd, who had served as Woods’ assistant and also coaches the school’s volleyball team, stepped into the athletic director role, while the school appointed Lance Hoeltke as the new head coach.
Hoeltke brings a blend of playing experience as a former quarterback and captain at the University of South Florida, a marketing degree, an MBA, and a coaching résumé that includes stints at Christian Academy of Louisville and Kentucky Country Day School, where he helped secure state championships in 2016 and 2018.
The reshuffling forced the cancellation or rescheduling of several early‑season contests, notably the preseason matchup against Manatee High and the season opener versus Venice High, while a road game against St. John’s College High School was also removed from the calendar.
Despite the upheaval, the team remains slated to compete in District 3A‑12, facing mandatory opponents such as Bayshore, Braden River, Cardinal Mooney and Southeast, and is awaiting the outcome of a pending clash with Valdosta, a 24‑time Georgia state champion.
