Sanctions Announced
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association and Jefferson County Public Schools announced sanctions against the Atherton and Central high school football programs following an unauthorized scrimmage in July, noting that the coaching staffs of both schools had already completed mandatory training on athlete safety.
The contest occurred before the teams had completed the mandatory heat acclimatization protocols required by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, a rule designed to protect players from overheating during the early season.
As a result, the first of two allowable preseason scrimmages against outside opponents was canceled across all levels, and two full‑gear practice sessions scheduled for early August were called off, with no weekend make‑up sessions permitted.
Each school was levied a $250 fine and placed on probation for the 2026 season; further infractions could trigger coaching suspensions or even game cancellations.
The disciplinary measures underscore the league’s commitment to player safety and adherence to established acclimatization timelines, while also serving as a warning to programs that prioritize competitive readiness over regulatory compliance.
