Roster Changes Before Fall Camp
Michigan announced that graduate wide receiver C.J. Charleston and safety Taylor Tatum would no longer be part of the 2026 roster, a move made on the first day of fall camp.
Charleston arrived in Ann Arbor after seven seasons at other programs, bringing extensive college experience but saw limited action due to a 2024 injury that hampered his impact on special teams.
Tatum, who transferred from Oklahoma in January 2024 and switched from running back to safety, had already demonstrated flashes of playmaking ability during the spring game, including two touchdown receptions as a defensive back.
Coaching Insights
Safeties coach Tyler Stockton highlighted Tatum’s unique blend of explosiveness and a baseball background, noting that his development on defense had been steady despite initial adjustments to backpedaling techniques.
Stockton emphasized that Tatum’s progress was evident in daily practice, even as the team evaluated his long‑term fit within the defensive scheme.
The decision to remove both players was presented without a detailed explanation, leaving observers to speculate about the program’s strategic direction and scholarship allocation.
While Charleston’s tenure was marked by brief appearances and a limited role, Tatum’s potential was viewed as promising, with plans to integrate him into the baseball squad in 2027 pending his continued development on the football field.
