A fresh start for the Fighting Hawks
The University of North Dakota’s men’s soccer program is gearing up for the 2026 season, kicking off with two exhibition fixtures that will test its early form. The first test comes on the road in Des Moines, Iowa, where the Fighting Hawks will meet Drake, followed by a home clash at Bronson Field in Grand Forks against Regina.
Both games mark a pivotal moment for head coach Henrik Sohn, who enters his second year at the helm after guiding the squad to its best start since 2005 in 2025. Sohn’s tenure has already been defined by a conference road win and a top‑50 national ranking in goals per game, setting a foundation for continued growth.
Key returnees set the tone
Adding to the optimism, two All‑Summit League standouts return to the roster. Senior midfielder Cora Ellermann, a Second‑Team honoree and All‑Newcomer selection, and junior forward Charlie Basinet, who earned an Honorable Mention, bring a combined 13 goals, 12 assists and 38 points from the previous campaign.
Their contributions helped the team rank among the top scorers in Division I history with 35 goals, while the program captured five All‑Summit League recognitions. The coaching staff believes the chemistry forged in 2025 will translate into a strong opening stretch.
The upcoming exhibitions will be played at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines and Bronson Field in Grand Forks, though neither match will be streamed live. Fans can expect a competitive showcase as the Fighting Hawks aim to build on last year’s momentum and push for another successful season.
