A sport on the rise
Women’s flag football is moving quickly toward official NCAA championship status. A national title game is being targeted for the spring of 2028, and more than 120 institutions are already competing under the NCAA’s emerging sports umbrella.
The next decisive step will be a vote in January 2028 that could add flag football to the list of championship sports for Division I, II and III. The NAIA has already crowned a flag football champion each May, providing a proving ground for the sport’s competitive structure.
California Polytechnic State University is staking an early claim to the inaugural Division I title. The program has attracted top prospects such as Maci Joncich and Ashlea Klam, signaling a serious push to assemble a championship-caliber roster.
Nebraska has added former NAIA powerhouse coach Liz Sowers to lead its new program. Sowers, who guided Ottawa University to five NAIA titles, brings a winning pedigree that could accelerate the Cornhuskers’ ascent in the national landscape.
The NFL and USA Football are providing crucial backing. The league’s Flag Championships draw participants from 13 countries, while USA Football has taken standout players like Joncich and Klam to international events such as the IFAF world championships in Germany.
Grassroots growth is evident in school programs. In 2024, more than 68,800 girls participated in high school flag football, a surge that mirrors the sport’s expanding media presence and community enthusiasm.
Olympic aspirations are also shaping the narrative. Flag football will appear in the Los Angeles Games before 2028, and NFL legends Steve Young and Jerry Rice have highlighted its tactical depth and inclusive nature as reasons for its broad appeal.
At the club level, Tenley Hill built a 19‑player squad from the ground up for UCLA, illustrating how the sport is spreading beyond varsity programs. The Emerging Sports for Women initiative further aims to close the participation gap between genders by promoting flag football alongside emerging sports like ice hockey and wrestling.
