Cortney Sawyer has been named an assistant coach for the Coastal Georgia women’s basketball program, bringing a decade‑plus track record of on‑court success to the Mariners.
A Championship Pedigree
During his tenure at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, Sawyer guided the team to its first state championship and finished with a 40‑23 record, a feat that cemented his reputation as a builder of winning cultures.
His coaching journey also includes stops at Lecanto High School, Trinity Catholic High School and St. John Lutheran School, where he honed a style that blends rigorous skill development with personal mentorship.
Player Development and Relationship Building
Sawyer has coached more than a dozen athletes who have gone on to compete at the Division I, II and III levels, and he has shaped AAU programs such as Southeast United 17U and Tampa Thunder 17U. He stresses that growth as a competitor and as an individual are inseparable.
Head coach Katie Novak‑Lenoir praised Sawyer’s expertise, noting that his strengths in player development, recruiting and culture building complement the program’s ambitions. “His dedication to fostering relationships with student‑athletes aligns perfectly with our vision,” Novak‑Lenoir said.
Sawyer said the move to Coastal Georgia appealed to him because of the school’s focus on growth, competitive excellence and the chance to return to the Sun Conference, a platform he describes as offering added energy and visibility.
