A Full‑Circle Moment
Barrett Cohen, a broadcasting veteran who has spent decades announcing high school games across the Cincinnati area, was recently appointed the public address announcer for Xavier University’s men’s basketball team, filling the role left by Herb Bauer after his 40‑year tenure.
Growing up, Cohen watched Xavier games from the second‑floor windows of Cincinnati Gardens, where his father served as a police officer, and he dreamed of one day adding his own voice to the arena’s soundtrack.
His announcing career spans stints at Moeller and La Salle high schools, where he called everything from grade‑school contests to future NFL linebacker Rocky Boiman’s team, and even an audition for the San Diego Padres’ PA role that, though unsuccessful, honed his craft.
Learning from a Legend
Now, he hopes to learn from Bauer’s deep connection with fans, studying the way the longtime voice shaped gameday memories and aiming to bring that same sense of belonging to a new generation.
Inspired by legends such as Derek Strong, Tyrone Hill, and the iconic play‑by‑play style of Marty Brennaman, Cohen blends meticulous preparation with a genuine love for the game, promising fans a more personal connection beyond the simple announcement of scores.
