The National Women’s Soccer League is set to rewrite its calendar for the 2027 season, opting for a February kickoff that places the start of the campaign just days before the Super Bowl.
A February Start
The regular season will open on February 11 in Los Angeles, a city that has become a frequent host for the league’s marquee events, and the timing is deliberately chosen to ride the wave of national sports attention surrounding the NFL’s championship game.
After a month of competition, the league will suspend play from June 24 through July 25 to accommodate the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, allowing the league’s top talent to represent their nations on the world stage without club obligations.
When the tournament concludes, the NWSL will resume and culminate with the championship match on November 20, a date selected to avoid the traditional summer lull and to align more closely with the schedules of Europe’s top women’s leagues, which now begin their seasons a month earlier than in previous years.
A Parallel Move in MLS
The National Men’s Soccer League has announced a comparable overhaul, shifting its own summer schedule to a spring format for 2027, a move that mirrors the NWSL’s effort to create a more synchronized calendar across the sport’s professional tiers.
