Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Florida, announced sweeping changes to its football program after a team lock‑in event revealed insufficient supervision during practice.
Coaching staff overhaul
Head coach Tyran Jones and assistant coach Kaycie Zorbas were fired, and four additional assistant coaches were also dismissed. Doug Faase, previously an assistant, was appointed interim head coach for the 2026‑27 season, while Luis Esposito remained on the staff.
Principal Tom Michel confirmed that no hazing took place but emphasized that students involved in the incident would face disciplinary action in accordance with school policy.
The school sent a letter to parents on August 4 outlining the disciplinary measures and reiterating its commitment to accountability, while noting that specific names and consequences could not be disclosed due to privacy laws.
New coaches Martin Cardenas, Jake Arbuckle, and volunteers Justin McEwen and Adrian Shipman joined the program as it prepares for the season opener against Cypress Lake on August 14.
The Tritons, who finished 3‑7 the previous year under Jones, will begin their 2026‑27 campaign on August 14, with the coaching staff hopeful that the fresh leadership will restore confidence and competitiveness.
