Liverpool’s basketball renaissance
Super League Basketball (SLB) has announced the launch of Liverpool Basketball as its 10th franchise, marking the return of top‑tier professional basketball to the city after a ten‑year hiatus. The team will begin play in the 2026‑27 season at the M&S Bank Arena on the city’s waterfront, a venue that has become synonymous with major sporting events.
The franchise is owned by Kings Dock Sports Group Ltd, a venture founded by sports investor Jason Dolan. Dolan says the club will combine elite competition with a strong community focus, aiming to create jobs, stimulate the local economy and inspire youngsters through outreach programmes.
Liverpool’s global sporting reputation, world‑class arena and vibrant city centre were cited as key factors in selecting the location. Officials say the addition of another year‑round professional sports organisation will enrich the visitor economy and cement the city’s status as a premier destination for major events.
Deputy Council Leader Ruth Bennett and Deputy Mayor Graham Morgan have voiced their backing, emphasizing the economic and social benefits the club will bring to the Liverpool City Region.
Beyond the court, the club plans to partner with local schools and charities, offering coaching clinics and mentorship schemes that seek to nurture the next generation of talent while celebrating Liverpool’s cultural identity.
