New Faces Aim to Propel UNF Men's Soccer Forward
The University of North Florida announced a trio of appointments that could reshape the program's trajectory as it seeks its first championship in years. Athletic director Montanella outlined how each hire aligns with the team's evolving strategy, emphasizing experience, community ties, and operational efficiency.
Lucas Sousa, a Brazilian-born former professional who spent two years playing in the lower tiers of his homeland before turning to coaching, will serve as assistant coach. His résumé includes a stint as founder of Hattrick Academy, where he designed futsal and soccer curricula, and a leadership role at Ginga Football Club in Connecticut, where he oversaw youth teams competing in the competitive Pre‑MLS NEXT circuit.
Joining Sousa, Luis Tejada brings a deep roots‑in‑the‑community perspective. Since 2019 he has headed the boys’ soccer program at Providence School, guiding the side to four straight district championships and a regional final appearance. Tejada also contributed to the development of elite prospects at Jacksonville FC’s MLS NEXT Academy, helping them navigate collegiate recruitment pathways.
Cierra Guerra, who previously managed the Osprey program as a student assistant, steps into the newly created role of Director of Operations. In that capacity she will coordinate practice schedules, travel logistics and fan engagement initiatives, drawing on a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management and a minor in Leadership earned just last year.
Montanella highlighted Sousa’s long‑standing relationship with the university, his playing pedigree and his proven ability to develop talent. He added that Tejada’s reputation in Jacksonville soccer and his focus on player wellness make him an ideal fit for the program’s growth agenda. Guerra’s organizational acumen and recent hands‑on experience as a student manager, he said, position her to streamline the team’s day‑to‑day operations.
