Washington Joins the Volunteers
Tennessee basketball announced the signing of Jalen Washington, a 6‑foot‑10 center who became eligible for the 2026‑27 season after a preliminary NCAA injunction. The move comes as the Volunteers look to reinforce a front court that has been thin in recent years.
Washington’s size and athleticism are expected to address the team’s need for rebounding and rim protection. His defensive instincts and ability to guard the paint should give the Volunteers a more formidable presence against the SEC’s top big men.
A Defensive Anchor
During his lone season at Vanderbilt, Washington averaged 8.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, while shooting 6.8 percent on blocks and 19.8 percent on defensive rebounds, numbers that placed him among the nation’s more efficient interior defenders. He also logged 7.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks in three meetings with Tennessee last year, helping the Commodores win two of the three contests.
Washington’s college journey began at North Carolina, where he progressed from limited minutes as a freshman to a more prominent role as a junior, posting 5.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game. His development trajectory suggests he can contribute immediately, especially in a system that emphasizes defensive intensity.
The Volunteers have bolstered their front court with additional transfers, but Washington’s arrival is being viewed as the centerpiece of the upcoming rebuild. With the goal of contending for a national championship, Washington says he is eager to be challenged and to help the program reach new heights.
