Fall Camp Begins
The University of North Alabama football team took a major step forward on Tuesday night, completing its first full‑pad practice of fall camp. The session, which drew a crowd of over 100 players vying for roster spots, signaled the start of a rigorous preparation period before the season opener.
Head coach Brent Dearmon, now in his second year leading the Lions, emphasized the importance of the milestone, noting that full pads bring the team closer to game‑day intensity. "We’re building a foundation that will carry us through the grind of the schedule," Dearmon said, highlighting the competitive atmosphere among the roster.
Key Returners
The camp features a mix of experience and fresh talent. Six starters from the previous season return, including quarterback Destin Wade, offensive guard Collin Wright and wide receiver KJ Fields, while defensive stalwarts such as senior lineman Jyheam Ingram, linebacker Fred Vili and defensive back Anthony Young are also back in the fold.
Newcomers from across the football spectrum are also making their presence felt. Transfers from FBS, FCS and lower divisions have joined the offensive and defensive lines, adding depth and competition. The coaching staff has praised the energy they bring to practice.
Special Teams Battle
Special teams will be a focal point early on, with returning kickers Ian Vachon and Chandler Dixon battling graduate transfer Thomas Schwartz V for role assignments. Meanwhile, true freshman punter Charles Mulcahy is expected to make an immediate impact on the field.
Looking Ahead to the Season
The season opener is set for August 29 at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, marking the first college football game ever played at the venue. The matchup against Samford will serve as the first test for a team that will later travel to face Arkansas, an SEC opponent, on September 5.
UNA’s schedule also includes home games at Bank Independent Stadium, which will host six contests and represent the program’s first on‑campus venue. The grand opening of Bobby Wallace Field will take place on September 19 against Alcorn State, adding another layer of excitement for fans.
With a slate that blends regional rivals and a historic SEC encounter, the Lions are poised to test themselves against a variety of competition. The early practices suggest a team that is both hungry and well‑prepared for the challenges ahead.
