Alabama State University is reshaping its defensive backfield as the 2026 season approaches, placing particular emphasis on the cornerback position.
The secondary has been bolstered during the 2024 offseason through the addition of experienced transfers, including Trent Henry, a redshirt senior who arrived from Troy, and Zach Williams, a junior transferred from Arkansas Pine‑Bluff.
Coach Eddie Robinson Jr. says the increased competition among the group is already translating into sharper play, noting that the depth will allow the defense to be more versatile on both sides of the ball.
Greg Mangle, the returning starter at cornerback, has fully recovered from a soft tissue injury and is expected to anchor the unit, while cornerback coach Saeed Lee oversees the development of the new roster.

Robinson emphasizes that daily battles in practice are driving each player to elevate their game, a mindset he believes will be crucial when the season opens.
The coaching staff is confident that the blend of veteran presence and fresh arms will give Alabama State the flexibility to adjust schemes and maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Last season the team finished second in the SWAC in passing yards allowed and sat near the middle of the conference in passing touchdowns, a performance that sets a baseline for improvement.
With the new talent and a focus on competition, the program aims to climb higher in the 2026 SWAC standings and contend for a top spot.
