A new era for community college athletics
Dallas College announced that beginning in the 2026‑27 academic year it will field varsity women's flag football teams at six of its campuses — Brookhaven, Cedar Valley, Eastfield, Mountain View, North Lake and Richland — competing within the Dallas Athletic Conference under the umbrella of the NJCAA.
The move is part of a nationwide surge in women's flag football, with the NJCAA projecting that at least twenty new teams will launch for the 2026‑27 season and that the total number of programs could exceed thirty by the following year. Institutions such as Alexandria Technical in Minnesota, Camden County in New Jersey, Central Alabama, Dawson in Montana, Enterprise in Alabama, Jackson State in Tennessee, Massasoit in Massachusetts, Murray State in Oklahoma, Rowan College in New Jersey and Richard Bland in Virginia are also adding similar programs.
The 2026 spring season concluded with Florida Gateway College securing its fourth straight NJCAA women's flag football title, underscoring the rapid growth of the sport at the two‑year college level.
The NJCAA will elevate women's flag football to a championship sport for the 2027‑28 academic year, and the inaugural NJCAA Women's Flag Football Invitational is slated for August 2027 at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, providing a national showcase for the emerging competition.
Beyond the Dallas Athletic Conference, the Alabama Community College Conference and the Florida College Systems Activities Association will also sponsor women's flag football, expanding the competitive landscape and offering additional pathways for student‑athletes.
