The Thayer High School football team capped a remarkable season with its first district championship since 2021, finishing with ten victories and a hard‑fought runner‑up finish in the SCA after a loss to Mountain Grove. The Bobcats then traveled to face the eventual Class 1 state champion Tipton in the quarterfinals, where they fell 22‑14 despite a spirited effort that left no other opponent within 25 points of their playoff run.
Coach Briar Hancock, who has led the program for several years, highlighted the team’s progress and the lessons learned from the Tipton defeat, particularly the costly turnovers that swung the game. “We’ve taken those experiences and turned them into a focus on improvement,” Hancock said, emphasizing the work still ahead.
A Season of Promise
Returning all‑conference talent anchors the roster. Offensive lineman Conner Crowder, the sole underclassman to earn first‑team all‑state honors in Class 1, will again protect the line, while running back Thomas Poole, a first‑team all‑conference back who amassed 988 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, is expected to be a primary weapon. Defensive standout Dominick Boyce, a second‑team all‑conference linebacker, returns as the team’s third‑leading tackler, and versatile playmaker Kashton Ming will see time at receiver, backfield, wing and tight end.
Kiptyn Atkisson is slated to take over at quarterback after a diligent offseason competition for the starting role. His development will be crucial as the offense seeks to blend the experience of seniors with the energy of juniors.
The schedule includes a preseason jamboree at Mountain Grove, where the Bobcats will meet teams such as Houston and Willow Springs, followed by an opening‑week showdown against Pocahontas, Arkansas, on August 28. The coaching staff stresses preparation, focus and intensity as the team builds cohesion among its seasoned leaders and younger contributors.
With high expectations and a clear sense of purpose, Thayer aims to translate last year’s momentum into a sustained run of success. The blend of veteran talent, strategic experience and a unified locker room positions the Bobcats to contend strongly in the upcoming campaign.
