Duke University’s football program is entering a pivotal phase as head coach Manny Diaz looks to solidify the quarterback position for the 2026 campaign.
Walker Eget, a graduate transfer who previously started at San Jose State, brings a wealth of experience, having logged 27 career appearances, 5,563 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
In contrast, redshirt freshman Dan Mahan arrived on campus as a three‑star prospect and has yet to see game action, but his athleticism and upside have generated considerable buzz among the coaching staff.
Both players took part in the first day of training camp, where Eget’s recovery from a knee injury appeared to translate into sharper footwork and more confident throws, while Mahan showed flashes of the playmaking ability that earned him his recruiting pedigree.
A Measured Decision
Coach Diaz has repeatedly emphasized that the final decision will hinge on fundamentals — particularly decision‑making under pressure and protection of the ball — rather than sheer arm talent alone.
