Buddy Powers, Jr., a 63‑year‑old former baseball coach and teacher, died on August 4, 2026, after a battle with liver cancer. His passing was announced by family and close friends, who described his final days as surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Woodbury, Tennessee, Powers dedicated his career to shaping young lives at Riverdale High School and Central Magnet, where he coached baseball and taught lessons that emphasized hard work, sportsmanship and kindness.
Beyond the classroom and the diamond, he was a devoted follower of Christ, describing his faith as the compass that guided both his personal life and his professional calling.
Colleagues and former players remember him as a mentor who taught lessons that extended far beyond the classroom or the ballfield, instilling perseverance and a love of family.
Survived by a Close‑Knit Family
He is survived by his children — Trice Powers, Lindsey Powers, Brooke Parrish and Johnny Powers — and a large extended family that includes grandchildren, siblings, nephews, a niece and countless friends who will cherish his memory.
Visitation for family and friends was held on August 6 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, where the community gathered from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to share memories and offer support.
The following morning, funeral services were conducted at the same chapel at 11 a.m., after which he was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery.
