Iowa State University has announced the addition of Allan Hanson to its men’s basketball coaching staff, where he will oversee guard development and contribute to the program’s defensive identity under head coach Greg Otzelberger.
From Player to Coach: Hanson’s Journey
Hanson spent four seasons as a point guard for the Milwaukee Panthers before transitioning to the sidelines, where he quickly made a name for himself at Nicolet High School in Wisconsin. There he guided a team to a 27‑1 record and a Division II state championship in 2018‑19, a feat that caught the attention of Bradley University.
At Bradley, Hanson helped the Braves to a 21‑13 mark in the Missouri Valley Conference, a league renowned for its competitive depth. His work with Jaquan Johnson, who jumped from 6.6 to 16 points per game in a single season, illustrated his knack for unlocking offensive potential.
A Defensive Mindset Meets Player Development
Otzelberger praised Hanson’s work ethic and his ability to build strong relationships with student‑athletes, qualities that align with the Cyclones’ emphasis on disciplined defense and sustained excellence in practice. Hanson’s defensive experience from previous stops is expected to reinforce the team’s scheme while his offensive focus will target the growth of guards such as Jamarion Batemon, Leon Bond III and Killyan Toure.
The new staff member will specifically work with Toure to sharpen his offensive IQ, while also guiding Batemon and Bond III in their development paths. Hanson’s philosophy centers on mentorship, daily improvement and a relentless pursuit of perfection, traits that coaches say will help the Cyclones compete at a higher level in the Big 12.
