A Michigan Journey
Matty Berniers arrived in Ann Arbor in the fall of 2020, joining a Michigan program that was already known for its blend of skill and camaraderie. Though the pandemic limited traditional freshman experiences, he quickly found his place on a line that would become one of the most productive in school history.
During the 2020‑21 campaign he netted ten goals, and the following year he doubled that output with twenty, helping the Wolverines capture the Big Ten Tournament and earn a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four. The team’s chemistry was evident in the way older veterans mentored younger players, while spontaneous gatherings — despite COVID restrictions — kept the locker room spirit alive.
The Frozen Four Run
The 2021‑22 season culminated in a 31‑10‑1 record, a Big Ten title, and a surprise appearance in the Frozen Four. Key contributors such as Luke Hughes, Owen Power and Kent Johnson formed a core that balanced elite play with a culture of mutual respect, and even Mackie Samoskevich’s occasional pranks added a human touch to the grind.
From College to the Calder
When the Seattle Kraken selected him with the first overall pick in the 2022 draft, few could predict the immediate impact he would have. In his rookie season Berniers not only adapted to the pro game but also captured the Calder Trophy, a testament to his scoring touch and leadership.
Now entrenched in the NHL, Berniers credits the Michigan experience for shaping his work ethic and team‑first mentality.
