The Abilene Christian Wildcats, sitting at a 25‑29 record, are heading to the 2026 Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament in Mesa, Arizona, with a chance to punch their ticket to the NCAA Division I Tournament.
A shot at history
The five‑day event, running from May 20 through May 23 at Hohokam Stadium, will employ a double‑elimination format that can stretch a team’s schedule to as many as seven games, giving the Wildcats multiple opportunities to rebound from an early setback.
Entering as the No. 5 seed, the Wildcats will open play against No. 3 Sacramento State at 5 p.m. Central Standard Time on May 20. A victory would set up a showdown with top‑seeded Tarleton State on May 21, while a loss would force an elimination game against the loser of the Utah Tech versus UT‑Arlington match.
The regular season offered several bright spots for the Wildcats, including notable non‑conference wins over Creighton, Indiana and TCU, as well as an 8‑10 record in WAC play that featured series victories over UT‑Arlington, Sacramento State and Utah Valley.
Their most recent appearance in a WAC championship game came in 2022, and the 2010 tournament still marks the last time they captured a conference title and earned an NCAA berth at the Division II level, a milestone the program hopes to repeat at the Division I level.
Coach and team members remain focused on translating regular‑season momentum into tournament success, knowing that a deep run would not only boost recruiting but also cement the Wildcats’ rise as a competitive force in the conference.
Fans, alumni and university officials are rallying behind the squad, hopeful that this tournament will deliver the program’s first Division I NCAA berth and a championship that would be celebrated across the Texas‑wide baseball community.
