James Barnett, a 3‑star offensive lineman from Iowa City West, announced his commitment to the University of Iowa on July 31, 2024, becoming the second recruit to join the Hawkeyes’ 2028 class.
The pledge underscores a continued pipeline from Iowa City West High School to the Big Ten program, a trend that has already produced several notable alumni.
A Legacy of Line Play
Barnett follows in the footsteps of his father, George Barnett, who serves as Iowa’s offensive line coach. The younger Barnett will now learn under the same man who helped shape his technique on the high school field.
Iowa’s offensive line has been a powerhouse in recent years, delivering five NFL draft picks in the last two seasons, including a first‑round selection in 2022. The program’s reputation for developing elite linemen was a major factor in the recruit’s decision.
At Iowa City West, Barnett starred as a starting center on a team that finished 8‑3 in 2025. He also placed second in the 4A state track meet in the shot put as a sophomore, showcasing the athleticism that translates to the gridiron.
Teammates such as Colin Whitters and Julian Manson have also pledged to the Hawkeyes, reinforcing the sense of camaraderie that attracted Barnett to Iowa.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Barnett expressed a desire to grow both as a person and as a teammate, setting a personal goal of capturing a state championship before his college career ends.
His commitment reflects not only a personal ambition but also a familial connection that ties his future to the university’s rich football tradition.
