Oberlin High School announced the cancellation of its football season for the current year because participation had fallen far below the levels needed to field a competitive team.
District officials said they had made several attempts to boost the roster, but enrollment numbers remained insufficient, with just five players showing up for practice on Friday, a drop from twelve the day before, and only eight at the mandatory camp on Monday.
A Tradition at Risk
Administrators cited concerns over the physical strain on athletes and the heightened risk of injury, noting that football has long been a cornerstone of the school’s identity.
The decision ripples beyond the field, affecting cheerleading squads, marching band members, families, alumni and the broader community, though the marching band season will continue unchanged.
While overall student enrollment has shown a modest increase, the numbers on the gridiron have not followed suit, prompting the district to seek partnerships with neighboring schools that might field combined teams.
Alternative arrangements are being planned for cheerleading, ensuring that those athletes can still participate in upcoming events.
