A Strategic Reinforcement for the Tar Heels
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has secured a major addition to its roster for the 2026‑27 campaign: Cameron Fens, a 7‑foot, 255‑pound forward who transferred from South Dakota State University.
Fens arrives after a standout season in which he earned first‑team all‑defensive honors in the Summit League, averaging 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game while shooting 57.9 % from the field.
The NCAA’s recent eligibility decision grants him a fifth year of competition, allowing him to step onto the Tar Heels’ court without the need for a redshirt, a benefit that stemmed from a broader injunction involving athletes from the 2022 high school class.
Coach Michael Malone highlighted the versatility Fens brings, noting that the player’s defensive intensity and rebounding prowess will complement the existing post presence of Sayon Keita, Alexandros Samodurov and Cade Bennerman, while also opening new lineup possibilities.
The coaching staff believes the newcomer’s physicality will address the team’s need for strength in the paint, and his experience as a double‑double producer against conference opponents should provide a reliable spark as UNC aims to contend for a national title.
