David Booth, a Kansas alumnus and prominent philanthropist, announced a $300 million gift to the University of Kansas in August 2025, the largest single contribution in the school’s history and one of the most consequential donations in college athletics.
The funds will be directed toward the renovation of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, accelerating the second phase of the Gateway District project. In addition to upgrading seating, concourses and video boards, the investment includes a $75 million challenge to other donors, aiming to broaden private support for the university’s athletic infrastructure.
Because construction will continue through the upcoming fall season, the stadium’s capacity will be temporarily reduced, but the university has scheduled six home games in Lawrence for fans to experience the renovated venue, including a potential Big 12 championship matchup that has heightened anticipation.
Kansas athletics have faced a turbulent couple of years, with the 2024 and 2025 campaigns falling short of the expectations set by back‑to‑back strong seasons in 2022 and 2023. Adjustments to the coaching staff and roster have been made, and head coach Lance Leipold is overseeing a rebuild that includes a new defensive coordinator, D.K. McDonald, who recently praised the stadium’s progress as a sign of the program’s commitment to both basketball and football.
Beyond the Gridiron: Community Impact
The Gateway District initiative extends beyond the stadium, planning for retail spaces, public plazas and improved pedestrian access that will benefit the surrounding neighborhood. University officials say the project reflects a broader vision of integrating athletics with civic development, a perspective echoed by Travis Goff, a senior associate athletic director who has been instrumental in coordinating the effort.
