Rex Gonzalez, the brother of former Arizona Diamondbacks star Luis Gonzalez, was officially named head coach of the Phoenix Desert Vista High School baseball team this week. The appointment follows a recommendation on July 10 and a unanimous approval by the Tempe Union High School District governing board on August 5, marking the start of a new era for the program.
A Family Legacy Meets Fresh Leadership
Gonzalez arrives with a strong local pedigree. He founded T‑Rex, a youth club baseball program, and spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at Phoenix Pinnacle High School, where he also mentored his son, Chase Gonzalez. The younger Gonzalez, a junior, hit .320 with 27 RBIs in 25 games last season, helping the Pioneers to a 20‑win campaign.
His coaching journey has not been without challenges. During his tenure at Pinnacle, a dispute involving a hand‑slap comment to a player sparked tension, leading to the departure of ten seniors from the team. The fallout culminated in the resignation of head coach Sam Messina after the season, as the program navigated a period of low morale.
From Controversy to Opportunity
Pat Herrera, who had guided Desert Vista since 2021, was suspended in April and subsequently dismissed. Matt Garvy stepped in as interim coach for the remainder of the season, but the team still managed to finish 23‑9 and reach the 6A double‑elimination tournament. Gonzalez now hopes to build on that foundation, citing robust support from parents, administrators, and the broader school community.
Expressing confidence in the upcoming season, Gonzalez emphasized that criticism is an inevitable part of sports leadership. He plans to leverage his experience, both as a player and a developer of youth talent, to foster a competitive and cohesive squad. The district’s endorsement, coupled with the school’s recent successes, positions him to steer Desert Vista toward another strong showing on the diamond.
