The University of Wisconsin–Green Bay’s women’s basketball program has become a benchmark of consistency in Division I, boasting 21 NCAA tournament appearances since its inception in 1973.
Among those appearances, the team’s 2011 Sweet 16 run remains a highlight, achieved under the guidance of Coach Matt Bollant, who helped cement the program’s reputation on the national stage.
A Rare Coaching Stability
Over five decades, the program has been led by only four coaches, a tenure that far exceeds the typical turnover seen across Division I basketball and has provided a steady foundation for sustained success.
Carol Hammerle, the founding coach, recently lauded Kayla Karius for her early achievements, noting that Green Bay is one of just two programs nationwide that have not seen any players enter the NCAA transfer portal in the past two years.
The Phoenix also enjoys a uniquely passionate fan base, regularly drawing more than 2,000 spectators to each home game, a testament to the deep community ties that have defined the program since its early days.
Return of a Familiar Face
Kevin Borseth, who previously coached at the University of Michigan, returned to Green Bay to take the helm, bringing a fresh perspective while honoring the program’s storied past.
Under Kayla Karius’s leadership, the team captured a 13th seed in the NCAA tournament and secured a four‑year contract extension, signaling the administration’s confidence in her ability to maintain the program’s competitive edge in the Horizon League and beyond.
