Early Foundations
Roy Kramer’s journey in college football began long before he took a clipboard to the sidelines. After graduating from Maryville College in 1953, where he had played in the inaugural Tangerine Bowl the previous year, he was called to serve in the Korean War, a stint that postponed his graduation. When he returned, he launched a coaching career that would soon dominate Central Michigan’s program.
Program Building
During his 11 seasons at Central Michigan from 1967 to 1977, Kramer compiled a 71.8% win rate and guided the Chippewas to a 12‑1 record in 1974, a season that earned him the NCAA Coach of the Year award. The following year the team moved into Division I‑A as part of the Mid‑American Conference, a transition he helped orchestrate, laying the groundwork for future growth.
Administrative Impact
His success caught the attention of Vanderbilt University, where he served as athletics director from 1978 to 1990. There he expanded the Southeastern Conference from ten to twelve members, championed the creation of the SEC Football Championship Game, and began shaping the ideas that would become the Bowl Championship Series.
From 1990 to 2002, Kramer led the SEC as commissioner, a tenure marked by aggressive expansion, strategic broadcasting deals, and the formal adoption of the BCS system that determined national champions. His contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame in 2023 and the establishment of the annual Roy F. Kramer Award, presented to the SEC’s top student‑athlete.
Beyond the trophies and titles, Kramer’s legacy lives in the many halls of fame that bear his name, from the Central Michigan Marcy Weston Athletics Hall of Fame to the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame. His influence continues to shape how the sport is organized, marketed, and celebrated.
