In the heart of Sacramento’s Mansion Flats neighborhood, a former truck terminal has been reborn as The Clubhouse, a street‑soccer venue that blends sport, community and ambition.
Founded in 2024 by Hayden Spilman and Ruben Cisneros, the club began as a casual futsal pick‑up league at Jennie McConnell Park and nearby Tanzanite Community Park, quickly drawing players from across the city.
The Clubhouse now houses two hard‑surface courts, seating areas and a courtyard that will soon welcome food trucks and live music, turning the space into a secondary hub for neighborhood gatherings.
Futsal, a fast‑paced version of soccer played on smaller fields with five‑on‑five teams, lasts only 40 minutes per match, making it ideal for short, intense tournaments that keep participants engaged.
The club’s weekly 3‑on‑3 league runs for a month each season, and its second season wrapped up in early June, showcasing the growing talent pool in the region.
A Vision Takes Shape
The founders envision The Clubhouse as more than a place to kick a ball; they aim to cultivate a community hub where art, food and sport intersect, creating a vibrant gathering spot for residents of all ages.
With permits in progress, the club plans to invite local vendors and performers, turning the courtyard into a seasonal marketplace that supports small businesses while funding the soccer programs.
Skip Rosenbloom, a longtime supporter, says the transformation reflects a broader trend of underused urban spaces being repurposed for youth engagement, and he hopes other cities will follow suit.
Kory Alvarez and Kai "KG" Galia, both regular participants, echo the sentiment, noting that the club’s inclusive atmosphere has helped them build friendships across cultural lines and discover new career prospects through exposure to scouts.
Beyond local play, Futsi has opened pathways to international competition; in August it hosted the International Street Football Association’s USA National tournament, where New York City went undefeated and earned the Team USA slot for the World Cup in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Sacramento players who took part said the event highlighted how the club brings together diverse groups, using soccer as a bridge that fosters inclusion and scouting opportunities for college programs.
