A New Chapter for Sarcoxie Football
After finishing 5‑5 in the 2025 campaign, the Sarcoxie football team faced its first losing season in over a decade, ending a 12‑year stretch of winning records. The result has set the stage for a determined effort to restore momentum as the program heads into the 2026 season.
Head coach Russell Ellis, now in his second year at the helm, has framed the upcoming campaign as more than just a return to the win column. He emphasizes building a "culture of success and good young men, respected in their conference," while also focusing on player development and team cohesion.
Returning Talent and Offensive Vision
The offense will retain a core group of playmakers, including junior quarterback Landen Straw, who impressed as a sophomore with poise under pressure. Complementing Straw are several returning linemen — Tyler Lambeth, Reily Barrios, Nolan Williams, Cash Holland, Wyatt Root, and Haiden Cancinos — who will anchor a run‑heavy scheme designed to control the tempo.
Kewper Pettit, a junior offensive lineman, earned first‑team all‑conference honors on offense and was recognized on defense as an honorable mention, underscoring his versatility. The line’s continuity should provide the backfield with the stability needed for a potent ground attack.
Defensive Stability and Cultural Goals
Defensively, the team returns eight starters, featuring standout tackler Carter Phillips, who has logged the most tackles over the past three seasons. The unit’s focus on soundness, alignment, assignments, and physical play aims to tighten up a defense that showed flashes of brilliance last year.
Beyond X’s and O’s, Coach Ellis sees the season as an opportunity to shape character. The jamboree scheduled for August 21 will serve as a final tune‑up before the season opener on August 28 against Commerce (Okla.), a matchup that will test the team’s readiness and the culture he hopes to embed.
