ESPN’s Football Power Index, commonly referred to as FPI, has become the go‑to metric for gauging how college teams might fare in the upcoming season. The system runs 20,000 simulations that factor in each squad’s current record, the strength of its schedule and the outcomes of games yet to be played.
For the 2026 Big Ten, the index paints a picture of stark contrast. Ohio State emerges as the clear front‑runner, posting an FPI of 28.7, a figure that signals a team projected to outperform the average opponent by nearly three decades of points over the course of a season.
Who Leads the Pack
Not far behind, the Oregon Ducks sit at 25.3 and the Indiana Hoosiers at 23.1, suggesting that the conference’s traditional powerhouses remain among the most competitive elements in the forecast.
The index also captures the margin by which a team is expected to exceed or fall short of an average opponent, translating raw simulation data into a points‑above‑average figure that is easier for fans to interpret.
Teams on the Bottom
At the opposite end of the spectrum, five Big Ten members are slated to finish with scores below 1.0, a threshold that denotes a team expected to be marginally better than an average opponent. Among them, the Purdue Boilermakers carry the lowest projection at –0.9, indicating a season that could trend below the mean.
Only two programs in the league register negative scores, underscoring how the majority of the conference still expects to be competitive despite the uneven distribution of talent.
Beyond raw numbers, the index offers a narrative about scheduling difficulty and historical performance. A high FPI reflects not just past glory but also a favorable path through the remaining fixtures, meaning that a team’s projected standing can shift dramatically as the season unfolds.
