Max McCormick, a former NHL forward and longtime hockey ambassador, has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Green Bay Notre Dame hockey program. After retiring from professional play following hip surgery, McCormick brings a wealth of experience to the bench, positioning himself to mentor the next generation of players.
In his new role, McCormick will work directly with the team’s forwards and the power‑play unit, drawing on his seven‑year NHL pedigree to shape strategy and development. His background includes stints with the Ottawa Senators, the Carolina Hurricanes and the Seattle Kraken, where he honed a reputation for tactical acumen and relentless work ethic.
The move comes after a distinguished playing career that includes leading the Notre Dame Tritons to their first Wisconsin state tournament appearance as a senior. During that season he scored six goals, capped by a hat‑trick in regional play, and earned Wisconsin’s Mr. Hockey award after posting 38 goals and 37 assists.
A Strategic Addition for a Program on the Rise
A 2011 sixth‑round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators, McCormick went on to log 94 NHL games for Ottawa, Carolina and Seattle, tallying eight goals while establishing himself as a reliable two‑way forward. His professional journey also saw him become the all‑time leader in goals and points for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, guiding the team to Calder Cup Final appearances in 2023 and 2024.
Off the ice, McCormick founded the McCormick Hockey School, a program that has helped youngsters develop skills and adopt a disciplined work ethic for over a decade. The school’s curriculum reflects his belief that mastery of fundamentals and a strong mindset are the foundations of success.
McCormick’s coaching philosophy centers on mentorship and accountability. He hopes to leverage his NHL experience and leadership background to accelerate the development of Notre Dame’s young talent, while also contributing to the broader culture of excellence within the program.
