North Carolina is looking to join the growing list of U.S. cities that host Formula 1 Grand Prix events, following the recent races in Miami, Las Vegas and Austin, Texas.
A Legislative Push
The state legislature has allocated $400,000 to fund a comprehensive study examining the economic footprint of the motorsports industry, with a particular focus on the potential benefits of a Formula 1 event.
Sanford Holshouser Economic Development Consulting, led by founding partner Ernie Pearson, is conducting the analysis and aims to deliver its findings before the end of the year.
The proposed venue would sit on a 1,200‑acre tract in Catawba County, north of Charlotte, a location prized for its natural terrain and accessibility.
Charlotte’s motorsports corridor already houses a concentration of racing teams and technical facilities, including Penske’s Cup Series operations, Haas F1’s headquarters, the NASCAR Hall of Fame and technical centers for Ford, GM and Toyota.
Beyond NASCAR, the region supports IMSA, NHRA and a host of other racing series, creating a deep talent pool and supply chain that could support a Formula 1 weekend.
If the study confirms strong economic returns, North Carolina could become the fourth U.S. host of a Formula 1 race, expanding a calendar that already includes Miami, Las Vegas and Austin.
