The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team has turned a simple idea into a lasting tribute to community resilience.
In a collaborative effort, head coach Mark Pope, his players and staff spent several days constructing a healing garden at Hazard ARH, a regional hospital serving cancer patients in eastern Kentucky.

CEO Brian Springate of Hazard ARH highlighted the significance of the project, noting that Pope’s leadership and the team’s dedication embody the spirit of giving back that the hospital strives to foster.
Forward Malachi Moreno explained that the garden reflects the Wildcats’ commitment to values that extend past basketball, representing the state and its people in a tangible way.
Milan Momcilovic, another member of the roster, described the experience as a meaningful way to contribute to Kentucky’s communities, emphasizing the impact of service on both patients and teammates.
The newly created garden now offers an outdoor sanctuary where patients and their families can relax, reflect and enjoy fresh air beyond the confines of the hospital.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats are set to open their season on November 3 against Manhattan, carrying the momentum of their recent community service initiative into the upcoming campaign.
