A Summer Defined by Service
The Kentucky Wildcats gathered in the heart of Eastern Kentucky for their annual retreat, a tradition that has become a cornerstone of the program’s summer schedule since Coach Mark Pope took the helm.
Their first order of business was a hands‑on community project: the players spent long, humid afternoons constructing a gazebo for the ARH Cancer Center in Hazard, turning the sweltering weather into a backdrop for teamwork and local goodwill.
Ray Combs, a familiar voice on social media, publicly praised the squad’s dedication, highlighting the significance of giving back to the town that supports them.
Coach Pope went live on Instagram during the build, fielding questions from ARH staff and sharing moments with players such as Milan Momcilovic and Franck "The Tank" Kepnang, who later expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ assistance.
"The Tank" called the players the GOATs, a sentiment that resonated with teammates who appreciated the camaraderie forged under the summer sun.
After the construction wrapped up, the Wildcats swapped tools for paddles and headed to Red River Gorge, where they embarked on a kayaking tour that has become a staple of their retreat.
The excursion continues a multi‑year pattern of pairing service work with outdoor adventure; in past years the team has built homes for flood victims, hosted community cookouts, and explored the natural wonders of the region.
Last season’s itinerary included hikes, ziplining, and a skylift ride at Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge, experiences that have now become part of the team’s evolving narrative of bonding and exploration.
Through these combined efforts, the Wildcats are not only sharpening their chemistry ahead of the upcoming season but also cementing a legacy of positive impact that extends beyond the basketball court.
